There are various options for external application to optimise the local effect. The choice of base product to which the active ingredient is added depends on the desired effect. This can be a cream (solid oil-in-water emulsion), an ointment (greasy, anhydrous base), a lotion (liquid form based on water, alcohol and/or glycerine), a milk (liquid emulsion base), a shampoo, etc. As a rule of thumb, apply ‘wet’ products (cream, lotion, milk, etc.) to moist skin and ‘dry’ products, i.e. an anhydrous base, to dry skin.
Gargle solutions and eye, nose and ear drops are also available for topical application. There are also base products for non-local applications such as suppositories, clysms, ovules and vaginal rinses.
There are different types of ointment bases, such as emulsions, base creams and oil-water emulsions. It is therefore important to mix the right herbal preparations (such as liquid extracts or essential oils) into the appropriate base product according to their intended use.
Active ingredients can be incorporated into these base products in the form of raw drug powders or extracts. As we have the base products in stock as standard, we can produce all these forms of application directly for you.
As standard, a hydrophilic concentrate of 20 % is incorporated into a topical preparation. A well-known example is the ‘Zheng Gu Shui’ lotion, which is available as a spray in 60 and 100 ml bottles (manufacturer: Dynafyt).
